Startup hangs at 1%, never reaches disk decryption prompt
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Steps to reproduce:

  • Start Librem 15v3 running up-to-date PureOS green
  • Wait for startup to complete

What should happen:

  • Loading bar starts
  • Disk decryption prompt appears
  • Enter password
  • Startup completes

What happens instead:

  • Loading bar stops at 1% mark
  • Nothing happens (waited 30 mins)

Notes:

  • Once the process hangs, bashing keys reliably (eventually) brings up the prompt (nothing consistent, I typically bash Ctrl-Alt-F1, Super-F1, Alt-F1, same for F2, F3, Enter, Space and Esc)
  • Hitting Esc at the prompt reveals some error messages including:
ata: SError: { UnrecovData 10B8B BadCRC }
ata1.00: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED
...
ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
...
WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

@d3vid Can you try Alt-F2?

@chris.lamb Thanks for the suggestion. I tried only Alt-F2 and it works no better (or worse) than button mashing without it.

So, I can reproduce this. ctrl-alt-f2 actually seems to work for me (in the sense that it restores the gui prompt)

Can you confirm so we can at least be approximately sure we are hitting the *same* problem? :)

Not related to T429a after all I think. I think I have a fix, just need to get back to my Librem machine to test.

chris.lamb claimed this task.

This is fixed if you have plymouth-themes 0.9.3-3pureos1 (just uploaded) and fontconfig 2.13.0-5 (see T434 - needs fast-migrating into green).

Just got these changes from an apt updated and rebooted. Works like a charm, thanks!
