firefox-esr - promotes nonfree search engines
Open, WishlistPublic

Description

Package Firefox ESR: Some Integrated search engines are non-free, such as google, yahoo, amazon, duckduckgo, etc.

Debian tracks creation of package yacy.
When done, Firefox ESR should recommend that package and use it by default when available.

NB! This issue is not about promoted search engine tracking its users (see T156) nor about it serving non-free JavaScript (see T609)

That's not freedom issue, but could be classified as a privacy problem.

How is this a freedom issue? Because the recommended search engines run nonfree javascript?

I suppose then that we have to use DuckDuckGo HTML only?

I recommend https://www.findx.com/ and https://gigablast.com/, they are 100% free software.

My recommendation for this would be only privacy-respecting choices:

DuckDuckGo (default)
Qwant
Startpage
Searx
Disconnect

DDG and Disconnect allow searching of mainstream search engines through them, in a privacy-respecting way.

This is not a freedom issue, since it does not involve installing non-free software locally.

So this issue seems to boil down to a wishlist item "bring in yacy to PureOS". PureBrowser has no leverage over what public search engines serve with regard to proprietary or non-proprietary javascript.
