PureOS 3 + Librem13 = NO BlueTooth
Open, HighPublic

Description

Fairly recent install of PureOS 3 onto a Librem13 laptop.

The BlueTooth interface is not recognized by the OS.

WiFi is working just fine (so it's not a problem with the h/w kill switches.)

Currently there is no free driver for Atheros bluetooth. We consider this work-in-progress.

This is for sure on our top list but it will take effort (anyone interested in what cypress opened with their documentation can contact even for hire).

Actually it is not the driver that is missing but a free firmware for the AR3k Bluetooth chip used.
You can see the failed firmware load attempt in the kenel messages:

[ 85.743641] usb 2-4: firmware: failed to load ar3k/AthrBT_0x11020100.dfu (-2)
[ 85.743695] usb 2-4: Direct firmware load for ar3k/AthrBT_0x11020100.dfu failed with error -2
[ 85.743699] Bluetooth: Loading patch file failed
[ 85.743734] ath3k: probe of 2-4:1.0 failed with error -2

@chris.lamb can you check this, as this is also the issue in upstream (Debian). How did we miss to load this firmware :-/

How did we miss to load this firmware :-/

Because it is a proprietary firmware.

Nicole just reported it is free firmware (and I recall Parabola loading it?)?

mladen added a comment.Jun 5 2018, 12:57

Nope, it's not free: https://packages.debian.org/buster/firmware-atheros

Nicole just said that the problem is that there is no free firmware, but a free driver exists (which does not work without proprietary firmware).

Sure. I can actually confirm:

  • We do not ship with this firmware so bluetooth is not functioning out-of-the-box on the L13
  • The firmware in question is non-free.
  • Obtaining the firmware manually (nb. outside of any PureOS mechanism, infrastructure, etc.) makes the Bluetooth function.

ah, my bad... we also got wifi chip from thinkpenguin that is suppose to work with bt but it actually doesn't (and @mak actually confirmed it is basically the same chip we use for our librems)

People from thinkpenguin.com told me that in fact not all Qualcomm Atheros wireless combo cards require proprietary firmware for bluetooth to function. But with current distros you won't even notice that you have a card that doesn't need the firmware since the kernel wouldn't try anything without it… If you don't make the firmware available the driver (and not the firmware loading mechanism) will be disabled.

After they told me that I tested our card in Librem 13 (v3) with Trisquel 7.0 and the device is at least initialized without the firmware. Using hciconfig and hcitool at least I can get information about the device and its status:

However, I couldn't find my other bluetooth devices to connect and when I set the device to visible I couldn't find it with my other devices…

@zlatan.todoric did you test the combo card you got from thinkpenguin with Trisquel 7.0?

nicole added a comment.Jul 4 2018, 03:06

That's pretty interesting!
It might even be that the "firmware" actually isn't real firmware but rather a set of config options. I have seen something like this for CSR based Bluetooth chips too. The settings would then also control the WiFi/Bluetooth coexistence which is probably the reason why it does not work w/o the blob in the Librems - the antenna switch does not switch it to the Bluetooth chip without it and thus the BT does not "see" any other devices around.
According to kernel sources our device is a
/* Atheros AR3012 with sflash firmware*/
The firmware it loads consists of two parts:
ramps_0x11020100_40.dfu
and
AthrBT_0x11020100.dfu
The "ramps" file is sysconfig the second is a RAM patch file for the in chip flash firmware.

Too bad all of this is not documented.

@mak can you take pictures of our and the ordered module? Also mak can elaborate more as he has the one.
@stefannagy can you also attach images of module you ordered? Trisquel having something and Debian not is of interest to me (adding also @jonas.smedegaard to maybe try and track what is the difference).

stefannagy added a comment.EditedJul 5 2018, 01:48

@zlatan.todoric I made pictures of the module in my Librem 13 v3 (see below). I didn't recieve the module from thinkpenguin yet, I'll send pictures as soon as I receive it.

It may well be that we're talking about different kinds of QCNFA222 here… Maybe the PCI IDs could be useful. On the Librem 13 v3 lspci tells me
Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0034] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Lite-On Communications Inc AR9462 Wireless Network Adapter [11ad:0802]
and lsusb tells me
04ca:300d Lite-On Technology Corp. Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth.

I received the module from thinkpenguin – and it's really a different QCNFA222… But yesterday I wasn't able to get it to work with Trisquel 7, it behaved the same way as our module (which is built in the Librem 13): the bluetooth device is initialized without the firmware but I can't find my other bluetooth devices to connect and when I set the device to visible I can't find it with my other devices.

I'll contact people from thinkpengiun and keep testing as soon as I have some free time. For now I'll add the PCI IDs and some pictures as I did for our module. lspci tells me
Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0034] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. AR9462 Wireless Network Adapter [105b:e07d]
and lsusb tells me
0489:e076 Foxconn / Hon Hai.

After playing around a bit I suspect the only reason why in Trisquel 7.0 both devices are initialized is that it uses an old kernel version (linux-libre 3.13), so the driver btusb is used instead of ath3k… Have a look at this commit: our bluetooth module (04ca:300d) is blacklistet in btusb and included in ath3k. I'm not sure but this could be a simple answer to the question why in Trisquel 7.0 the device is initialized but not in recent Debian versions / PureOS / …

I was able to reproduce the same behaviour I see in Trisquel 7.0 with the card I got from thinkpenguin (with bluetooth module 0489:e076) – device is initialized but not usable, see above – with a recent kernel (Linux version 4.18.0-rc4) by reverting this commit. I'm quite sure I get the same result with the combo card I got with my Librem 13, but I don't want to change the cards too often… I'm afraid to fret the antenna connectors…

I attach two files, maybe they are useful. I used btmon with two different kernels:

is what I got when I used the kernel I built with the reverted commit, is what I got when I used an (untouched) linux-image-4.16.0-2-amd64 in Debian testing with the non-free firmware installed. In both cases I opened GNOME bluetooth settings and tried to connect my (allready paired) bluetooth speakers.

When you open GNOME bluetooth settings the bluetooth device should be set to discoverable and it should be scanning for other devices. So I hope the files cover the most important things.

stefannagy added a comment.EditedJul 17 2018, 04:21

People from thinkpenguin insist on that their card works with Trisquel 7 – and that if it doesn't work for me it has something to do with my system ("USB controller related problems/USB hub issues/or whatnot").

Now what I see frequently in the kernel buffer when I enable bluetooth (no matter which kernel I use) is:
usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110

usb 1-3 is where my Atheros bluetooth device is… I found out that USB error -110 means power exceeded, the host could not provide enough electric power for the device to operate (see stackoverflow). As you can see in hcitrace0 (see above) without the firmare I get the error message
= bluetoothd: connect error: Host is down (112)

Can anyone here confirm USB error -110?

mak added a comment.Jul 21 2018, 14:48

@zlatan.todoric Sorry for the late reply. As I am about to depart for Debconf, I can't really comment on the issue, but I can provide pictures of the chip I got from ThinkPenguin, which pretty much was exactly the same type that was already built into my Librem device:

mladen added a comment.EditedAug 8 2018, 15:15

I am currently on Parabola GNU/Linux which is a Libre distro. Bluetooth working fine on Librem 15v3.

lspci output:

...
01:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
...

@mladen.pejakovic Did you restart into Parabola from a distro with the firmware installed?

When I restart from Debian with firmware-atheros installed into a Trisquel live system it always works. Also when I deinstall firmware-atheros in Debian and then restart the system. But when I shut the system down, wait for 10 seconds and then start without the firmware provided it doesn't work…

mladen added a comment.Aug 9 2018, 02:35

@stefannagy, that's interesting, I did use ArchBang (Arch based live system) before installing Parabola. And after leaving the laptop shutdown overnight, bluetooth is now not working.

This gives me idea, could we somehow "load" the firmware into the wifi card?

@mladen.pejakovic As far as I know when installed (like on debian with the non-free firmware-atheros package) the firmware is loaded into a volatile memory of the wireless card. Volatile memory requires power to maintain the stored information. So when you restart, the firmware remains, when you shut down, wait a bit and then start your system the firmware is lost.
