pureos-gnome: pulls in chromium via pureos-webext
Open, NormalPublic

Description

webext-ublock-origin (which we install by default in pureos to have ublock origin with firefox-esr) is now a transitional package for two other packages: webext-ublock-origin-firefox and webext-ublock-origin-chromium and this last package recommends chromium

Currently in PureOS: pureos-gnome recommends pureos-webext > which recommends (the now transitional package) webext-ublock-origin > which in turn also depends of: > webext-ublock-origin-chromium which recommends the browser chromium.

Should we adjust: pureos-gnome and pureos-webext to only recommend webext-ublock-origin-firefox instead of the now transitional package webext-ublock-origin?

@mak pinging you here because the changelog of these packages indicates you were the last person to update them. But feel free to assign to someone else ๐Ÿ˜„

Basically my fear is that people will end up having chromium installed in their systems ๐Ÿ“ฆ

A user reported that after an update chromium was installed in his system: https://forums.puri.sm/t/chromium-installing-automaticly-when-updating/13507

If anything, I am not using my librem13 at the moment, the only thing I did is install PureOS and updated it, if you need more output of commands, I'l be happy to help))

Seems this was addressed in source package pureos-meta on November 18th 2020.

Assigning to @mak to let him close this issue report when confirmed that the intended change actually apply in our releases of PureOS.

ok, some points about this:

1 - webext-ublock-origin-firefox does nor depend on chromium so we could have installed without this risk.
2 - With this this also means that firefox-esr would not have privacy badger preinstalled for those that choose to use firefox-esr in byzantium: https://puri.sm/posts/an-epiphany-regarding-purebrowser/

Are we going to drop having ublock origin and privacy badger pre installed due to the default browser change to Epiphany in Byzantium?

jonas.smedegaard renamed this task from pureos-gnome: change pureos-webext to recommend: `webext-ublock-origin-firefox` instead of `webext-ublock-origin` to pureos-gnome: pulls in chromium via pureos-webext.May 25 2021, 09:29

This should be resolved in byzantium already :-)
