GNOME VPN cannot connect to a VPN connection.

I have tried Purist VPN ovpn file importing as well as manually creating a VPN connection in GNOME network settings, none worked. GUI always resets user certificate and user private key fields.

network-manager-openvpn-gnome package is at ver. 1.8.0-2.

Arch Linux bug tracker entry for the same issue suggest upgrading to 1.8.1 fixes the issue.
